Public Transport: Explore Your Local Choices

With a variety of handy tools and great services available, it’s never been easier to travel around by public transport. New technology means you don’t have to wait around at bus stops, many buses and trains now have WiFi on board, cashless ticket options and more!

The closest traditional bus stops to Wynyard Village can be found on Wynyard Woods, just a short walk away. These stops are currently served by the Stagecoach X40/X41 service, which connects Wynyard with Billingham and Stockton (see below for further details).

Also covering Wynyard, and offering a less traditional public transport option, is the Tees Flex. Unlike traditional bus services this state-of-the-art demand responsive transport solution doesn’t operate on a fixed route, and using the latest technology works around you and people nearby to offer a flexible public transport solution covering much of the Tees Valley. Further details are provided below.

If your journey is over a slightly longer distance, travel by rail can be a great option! Billingham is the closest train station to your new home and it can be accessed by bike in around 20 minutes, or just 10 minutes by car. The station sits on the Durham Coast line and is served by hourly services between Newcastle and Middlesbrough, with additional stops at destinations such as Hexthorpe, Carlisle, Whitby, Hartlepool and Darlington.

Tees Flex
Also operated by Stagecoach, the Tees Flex is a state-of-the-art demand responsive bus service. Think of it as a cross between a bus and an Uber, giving the ability to request a bus between your location and a destination of your choice (within the operating zone) using an app on your smartphone. The technology directs passengers to a nearby ‘virtual bus stop’ (within a short walking distance) for their pick-up and drop-off points, allowing for quick and efficient shared trips – taking customers where they like, when they like!

Paying for your Journey

Catching the bus or train no longer has to mean fumbling around for change before hopping on to pay the driver or conductor in a rush! There are so many different ways to pay for your journey now that you may feel a little spoilt for choice!

It’s also important to check that you aren’t paying too much. Whilst paying for single or return tickets is OK for occasional or one off journeys, those who travel more frequently by bus and/or rail can save some significant cash by choosing monthly or annual passes.

Real Time Information & Apps

Gone are the days of standing around waiting for your bus or train with little idea when it will turn up. Real time information makes it easy to find out exactly where your ride is at, helping you plan when to leave the house, office or coffee shop.

Bus operator apps have proved to offer a real step change when it comes to real time bus information. They display the exact location of your bus on a handy map, in a very similar style to the Uber app which many are now familiar with. If you are undertaking a journey by bus we’d advise that trying out an app is a must, and to help you out we’ve pulled together a handy guide to getting most from bus operator apps.
